Douglas Koufman

With his elderly mother suffering from dementia in suburban Boca Raton, Douglas J. Koufman cleaned out half her savings, taking nearly a million. The Miami man is charged with exploitation of an elderly person or disabled adult for more than $100,000, a first degree felony, according to documents. Koufman surrendered late Tuesday at the Palm Beach County Jail and left early Wednesday after posting $20,000 bond.

According to an affidavit by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Koufman misappropriated at least $873,000 from his mother's trust fund.
