Home Inspection Connection LLC (HIC) is a subcontractor for Bank of America (BOA) Mortgage Company. BOA uses a subcontractor as a buffer to their unethical and harassing mortgage collection practices.
HIC pays $4-$6 per inspection to it's "contractors" and then BOA charges the home owner, who is already having trouble making a house payment, $150 for the visit.
HIC calls its workers "contractors" rather than "employees" to avoid paying medical insurance, unemployment insurance, retirement or any other benefits that an ethical employer would offer. Contractors are actually required to sign a document acknowledging they are not employees.
HIC charges their contractors $150 a month to use the company cell phones to do the work. They also charge $50 a month to use their swift routing program, which is a website that notifies the worker of houses that need inspections. There is no compensation for car mileage, frequent oil changes or even lost work due to their shoddy reporting system.
I was treated as an unwelcome presence at the mortgagees' homes, was often threatened and had the police called on me several times.
My worst experience was having to go to the home of an old lady who had lived there for 30 years and the bank was trying to take away her home. Her husband had died 6 months before, but BOA didn't warn me of that, so they had me upsetting this poor old widow woman every month by asking if her husband was at home. These companies have no compassion for their customers or sympathy for the economic problems so many are experiencing.
For 10 consecutive days of the month, the contractor works from sunrise to sunset, cramming in as many inspections into a day as possible, not even stopping for lunch. The rest of the month, the contractor may only get 2 inspections a day, which totals $10 for the day, but you spend hours driving to the locations, and actually lose money on those days because of increasing gas prices. It is impossible to do this job and a second job because of the unpredictable, on-call nature of inspections.
HIC trains their workers to drive and fill out surveys on the tiny cell phone screen at the same time. Not only is texting and driving at the same time illegal in most states, it is very dangerous.
If you are considering contracting for HIC you should think about the above very carefully. I put up with HIC because the job market is very tough right now and I couldn't find anything else. However, in the end I made very little after expenses, considering the amount I had to drive and the threats I had to endure.
Bottom line: HIC treats its contractors badly. BOA treats its mortgagees badly. Any job is better than this.
